The resolution of an image indicates how many pixels there are per inch (2.54 cm). The more pixels there are within 1 inch, the sharper and higher-quality the image. The fewer pixels there are, the more noticeable they will be, resulting in a lower-quality image.
What is the best resolution for my file?
This depends on a number of factors:
1. The size of your print (e.g., 10x10 cm or 400 x 200 cm)
2. The viewing distance at which your print will be viewed (e.g., 30 cm or 5 m)
For example, a large banner along a public road measuring 400 x 200 cm has more than enough resolution at 60 ppi to appear sharp. Since passersby do not get close to the image, the pixels will be barely distinguishable from one another.
You may use the following rule when formatting your files:
: 300 PPI
Tip: A lot depends on the distance from which the prints will be viewed. For example, if you have a 150 x 150 cm image hanging at eye level in your office hallway, you should preferably submit a file with a resolution between 100 and 150 PPI, regardless of the sign’s size. This is because it will be viewed from a shorter distance.
